Topics for Discussion in your novels

When you take your novel tests on Tuesday (oral) and Wednesday (written), you will first get a short quiz on the content, and after that I will ask you to discuss some of the questions below. The questions below are especially important for the higher grades, so prepare them well if that is what you are aiming for. You need to bring your books for the test, and you may also bring any hand-written notes you have taken.

The Kite Runner
  1. The author chooses to give Hassan a harelip, and this harelip plays a role throughout the novel. Describe how, by giving examples from the novel and discussing them.
  2. What do you think is the most important scene in the novel, and why?
Look at the following three statements. Say if you agree or disagree with them, and explain your standpoint by referring to the novel and discussing your views.
  1. A person can commit an act that is beyond redemption.
  2. Children reap what their parents sow. 
  3. Discrimination is part of human nature and will always exist.
The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time
  1. Discuss the relationship between father and son in the novel. How well do you think Christopher's father copes with the situation?
  2. What do you think is the most important scene in the novel, and why?
Look at the following three statements. Say if you agree or disagree with them, and explain your standpoint by referring to the novel and discussing your views.
  1. The actions of Christopher's parents are reasonable, considering their son's handicap.
  2. People like Christopher might be dangerous.
  3. People in with jobs in official places should be better equipped to handle people who suffer from different kinds of handicaps.

  1. Discuss what role the dead character Bugs plays in the novel.
  2. What do you think is the most important scene in the novel, and why?
Look at the following three statements. Say if you agree or disagree with them, and explain your standpoint by referring to the novel and discussing your views.

  1. Sal is a fair leader, with the group's best interests at heart
  2. Richard is one of the good guys in the novel.
  3. The idea of an isolated community in Paradise is a good idea, and could work under different circumstances.
